The first "Mels Drive In" was opened on December 23, 1947 in San Francisco, California. The carhop eatery was an instant success: Mels was the place to go, with locations throughout Northern California. Known for great food, value and service "Mels" was a happy restaurant, with music and fun for all.
The 1973 release of the classic movie "American Graffiti", was set at the Original Mels, creating a renewed interest in the 50's as a simpler, feel good era when anything seemed possible. Today, this spirit is still present in The Original Mels Diner.
